Appropriating Digital Technologies for Teaching and Scholarship in the Humanities and Social Sciences
This interactive workshop introduces digital technologies for teaching and scholarship in the Humanities and Social Sciences using computational methods, textual mining tools, and linguistic computation. Participants will be able to carry out quantitative and qualitative research methods implemented in the software Wolfram Mathematica, which is a high-level computational language, as well as software for textual analysis and processing that allows a wide range of operations and research methods with different types of texts and in different formats. Participant-led initiatives include: extracting data from Twitter, Wikipedia, and web archives; processing text and image as data; creating Wordclouds, maps, graphics, and other visual tools for displaying results; and formulating research questions in digital studies.
Participants should plan to bring a laptop with Wolfram Mathematica installed. This software is available for both University-owned and personal laptops via the Help Desk. Registration is limited.
