Faculty Hub Conversation: Balancing Flexibility and Structure
Join the Faculty Hub for a conversation about balancing flexibility and structure within your courses. As we wrap up the semester, we'll reflect together about lessons learned and consider what we might change next semester to maintain or achieve a greater balance between structure and flexibility in our teaching. Where in our courses might it be possible to build in flexibility--for ourselves and for our students? Where in our courses might we need to add more structure or accountability (again, for ourselves and for our students)?
Join us for this opportunity to share ideas, ask questions, and gather feedback from colleagues.
No pre-reading is necessary to join this conversation, but for those who are interested in resources on this topic, we recommend the following:
- "Students expect 'total flexibility' in the pandemic-era classroom. But is that really what they need?" by Beckie Supiano for The Chronicle of Higher Education
- "Survey: Students Cite Barriers to Success, Seek Flexibility" by Colleen Flaherty for Inside Higher Ed
- "Balancing Flexibility and Accountability" by University of Michigan, Center for Research on Learning and Teaching
- "Flexibility with Boundaries" by UNC-Chapel Hill
This conversation is open to faculty and instructional staff from any disciplinary background and will take place on Friday, May 5 from 11-11:50 a.m. in the Faculty Hub (3rd Floor of Boatwright Library).
*Note: Participants may choose to join this session in-person at the Faculty Hub or virtually via Zoom. Virtual participants will be sent a Zoom link prior to the session. Please register for the session in advance to let us know you'll be joining us.
