Greetings from the team here at the Faculty Hub! We hope that the first weeks of classes have been going smoothly for you. We’ve enjoyed connecting and re-connecting with you as you’ve returned to campus, and we look forward to supporting you as teacher-scholars as the academic year progresses. Because we recognize both the joys and challenges that come with being a teacher-scholar, this newsletter highlights two teaching-related resources (support for challenging moments in the classroom and teaching squares) and a new service for your scholarship (academic writing coaching).

Academic Writing Coaching Service |
|
Every writer needs a reader, and our coaching services can help!
The Faculty Hub is piloting a new professional development service that provides faculty the opportunity to work with a writing coach on peer-reviewed writing projects such as major articles, book proposals, book chapters, external grants, and major external fellowships. Coaching is also available for those whose research involves writing scripts to conduct analysis and create visualizations. One-on-one or small group coaching are both possible.
The coaches can help keep your projects on track and provide feedback at any stage in the writing process—from brainstorming as you’re getting started to responding to a cantankerous reviewer during the revise and resubmit phase.

Responding to Incidents That Affect the Teaching & Learning Climate |
|
President Hallock's email on Tuesday, Sept. 6 may have you thinking about how best to respond to events that may affect your students' sense of safety and well-being. We wanted to share a few relevant resources that faculty might find helpful.
This short article from Cornell's Center for Teaching and Learning offers some strategies on how to respond to incidents that affect the teaching and learning climate. It suggests ways to acknowledge an incident; express care, concern, and availability; and remind students of resources available on campus. (Estimate read time: 2 minutes)
This website from the University of Michigan offers useful guidelines for instructors responding to incidents of hate, bias, and discrimination through in-class discussion. It provides several suggestions, including ways to set community ground rules and to be an inclusive facilitator. (Estimated read time: 8 minutes)
This website from the Vanderbilt Center for Teaching offers some possibilities of how you might address difficult issues in class, along with readings and resources for teaching in challenging times. (Estimated read time: 5 minutes) |

To join us for a coffee hour conversation with Morgan Russell-Stokes, Ed.D. Dean for Student Equity & Inclusion and Director of the Student Center for Equity & Inclusion on Monday, Sept. 12. She will share her insights about student experiences and help us reflect together on how to facilitate difficult dialogues in class. There will be two open sessions for faculty:

Teaching Squares |
|
|
|
Teaching Squares are a great way to connect with your colleagues to receive some informal, low stakes feedback—as well as some inspiration—for your teaching.
How it works:
- You contact the Faculty Hub!
- You are placed in a group with two or three other faculty members with compatible schedules and interests.
- You hold a short group meeting to share a plan for observations.
- You observe each other’s teaching and reflect on what you’ve observed.
- As a group, you hold a square shares meeting to share your observations and reflections.
The Faculty Hub will provide materials to guide you through the process, and we’re also happy to provide a place for you to meet.
