Kyla Wazana Tompkin’s now-classic article, “We Aren’t Here to Learn What We Already Know,” reflects on the difficulties involved in asking students to read dense, difficult, theoretical texts and provides practical advice to students and faculty alike on how to prepare to discuss these kinds of texts in class.

|
For a recent “Working the Humanities” workshop, the Humanities Center prepared an “Art of Reading Theory” cheat sheet, synthesizing the advice of Tompkin’s article with guidance on close-reading, comparing the skills involved in reading theory to those used in reading poetry.

This semester, the Faculty Hub is hosting two biweekly reading groups for faculty and staff interested in engaging more deeply with pedagogical literature. If you’re passionate about building more compassionate and supportive learning environments, consider joining Faculty Hub Slow Read: A Pedagogy of Kindness by Cate Denial. Or join the Critical University Studies Book Club if you’re curious to examine the structures, systems, and power dynamics within higher education and how these complex realities impact teaching and learning. Though these reading groups have already had their inaugural meetings, it is not too late to join!
