One of my two favorite things ever recorded for television is the R.E.M. rendition of "Shiny Happy People" for Sesame Street--"Furry Happy Monsters." I watch it when things feel particularly challenging, because I can’t think of anything more uplifting than Muppets grappling with sadness and coming out on the other side while Michael Stipe jumps up and down singing. I welcome you to watch it and see for yourself how helpful it is. (Unless you're not an R.E.M. fan. Or a Muppet fan. I get that, too.)

It’s this kind of joy that helps center me and reminds me of the things I love--and why they matter. As the semester wraps up, no matter how trying it has been, I hope you’re able to find that same kind of joy and carry it with you into this final week (!!!!????) of classes. - Ryan

An additional note: we hope you're all hanging in there during this busy and disrupted week! Due to the closure of Boatwright Library, the Faculty Hub is closed today, Tuesday, 4/22. We are shifting all Faculty Appreciation Days activities to Wednesday (pending operating status). Thus, we'll have cupcakes AND lunch available on Wednesday in the Faculty Hub (or perhaps another location) from 12:15-4 p.m. Massages for today (Tuesday, 4/22) have been cancelled, but there are still several slots available on Wednesday if you're able to pivot. We will send an update if there are any additional changes. Sending you all best wishes--and our appreciation.

It’s incredibly common to talk about how AI “hallucinates” when it generates false and random information. In “Are We Tripping? The Mirage of AI Hallucinations,” Anna Mills and Nate Angell argue that this is a misleading term, and that “mirage” is actually the better metaphor. As they point out, AI’s false outputs aren’t visions; they’re illusions shaped by data, algorithms, the infrastructure behind the scenes, and our own very human hopes for what AI might mean (man). It’s a fun thought experiment on its own, but also a useful push toward making discourse around AI more precise—and our interactions and expectations more grounded.

IP3 Deadline Extended:

The Inclusive Pedagogy Partnership Program (IP3) pairs students and faculty (or instructional staff) together for a semester-long partnership experience focused on the implementation of principles of inclusive pedagogy. At the beginning of the semester, student and faculty partners identify a specific focus for their work together. Then, student partners regularly observe, provide feedback, and serve as a thinking partner for the faculty member, helping them to reflect on, refine, and enhance their inclusive teaching practices.
