Facilitated Course Assessment |
|
|
|
It's almost time for a midterm check-in with your students. |
|
As we approach mid-semester, it’s the perfect time to ask your students to reflect on their learning. One way to do this is to schedule a Facilitated Course Assessment (FCA). An FCA is a great way to gather some informal, formative feedback from your students about how your course is going. This Faculty Hub service is facilitated as a dialogue between students and a Faculty Hub consultant. Read the Faculty Hub’s overview of facilitated course assessments for more information.
If you don’t have time for a FCA, there are some other ways you might consider gathering feedback at the midpoint of the semester. This Faculty Hub tipsheet offers some ideas. |

In addition to the two programs below, Dr. Ganote is available for one-on-one or small group consultations with faculty members during her visit. Teaching Difficult Topics February 9 from 12:00-1:00 p.m.
In this session, we will discuss ways to address difficult topics in the classroom. Instead of fearing these topics, we can actively frame them in ways that are much more likely to create vibrant, respectful dialogue that leads to new insights for our students and ourselves.

Navigating Courageous Conversations: Meeting Classroom Microaggressions with Microresistance February 10 from 10:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m.
As the diversity of our student population increases, we as faculty can better include all learners in our classrooms by raising our own awareness of microaggressions and addressing them when they occur. In order to do that, we can learn about and practice microresistance. Microresistance techniques allow us to address microaggressions in productive and educational ways that attempt to open, instead of shutting down, dialogue. In this interactive faculty development session, we will discuss a variety of microresistance techniques and then practice them in a low-stakes environment, so that we are more prepared when they occur in our own classrooms, labs, or studio spaces. Morning Blend! |

Morning Blend is a quick and easy way to keep up to date on topics that affect your teaching and/or scholarship. You have two options to join: either virtually on Tuesday morning (8:30 - 9:00 a.m.) or on Wednesday mornings (9:30 a.m. - 10:00 a.m.) in the Faculty Hub (touchdown table in front of the kitchen). Don’t have time to join us? No worries--a video recording and tip sheet will be available to anyone who wishes to engage with the material online. February Writing Retreat |

February 15, 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m., Faculty Hub
The Faculty Hub will host a writing retreat in our space on Wednesday, February 15 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. We’ll provide all participants with lunch, and we’ll have coffee, tea, and snacks available all day long. Feel free to join for any amount of time that works with your schedule.

Setting Goals and Reclaiming Joy as Writers |

For busy academics with a number of deadlines and pressures, it is all too easy to lose sight of the joy that exploring scholarly interests can bring. In this interactive workshop and dialogue, we'll reflect on what brings us joy and pleasure in our work and consider various strategies to prioritize what sustains us.
This conversation will be facilitated by Kitty Maynard and is open to faculty and instructional staff from any disciplinary background. |

The UR 14-Day Writing Challenge |
|
February 20 - March 5
Each semester, the NCFDD (The National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity) hosts the 14-Day Writing Challenge. The challenge is a great way to jumpstart your writing and establish good writing habits. This spring, we will offer you a chance to participate in the event alongside your colleagues here at the University of Richmond. For two weeks, you can join colleagues across campus (and the nation!) to observe a daily writing practice, committing to writing for at least 30 minutes and day, recording your progress, and supporting other writers.
If you'd like to use the NCFDD's platform to record your progress, you can sign up for the national event once you create an account with the NCFDD with your UR Net ID.

Faculty Hub Conversations |
|
|
|
Periodically throughout the semester, the Faculty Hub hosts interdisciplinary conversations around a topic of shared interest. The goal of these conversations is to provide faculty with opportunities to share knowledge and practices with one another, to ask questions and get feedback from other faculty, and to build community and connection with colleagues from across campus.

Other Events Happening On-Campus This Month |

Student-Organized Equity Summit 2023 (EQ23) |
|
The Equity Summit is a yearly gathering that aims to bring together students, faculty, staff, and other members of the UR community to have in-depth conversations on different topics around diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging at UR. The EQ23 will be an in-person, week-long event that works with one topic and one student panel each day. Every session will be facilitated by faculty, staff, students, and other community members who will briefly introduce the topic and guide a discussion surrounding it.
Dates: February 13, 14, 15, and 17, 2023 Session times: 4:45 to 6:15 p.m. and 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. Location: Tyler Haynes Commons
