A writing group can provide structure, companionship, and support as you embark upon the sometimes enjoyable, sometimes frustrating job of engaging in your summer scholarly work. Several recent studies demonstrate that working in a writing group can increase your productivity and general well-being as a writer.

Special this summer! We will also offer a writing group for those of you looking to connect with other colleagues preparing a dossier for promotion to full professor. If you’d like to join this group, please indicate your interest on the registration form. (Please note that the Faculty Hub is only providing organizational support for this group.)

Academic Writing Consultants
Academic writing consultation is a professional development service that allows faculty to work with an expert on writing projects such as major articles, book proposals, book chapters, external grants, and external fellowships. Consulting is also available for faculty whose research involves writing scripts to conduct analysis and create visualizations. Feedback and guidance from writing coaches could be useful at the early stages of a project, at key moments in the writing process, and before submitting drafts for peer review. For more information and to sign up, please visit the Writing Consultant Interest Form.

Are you working on a book proposal this summer? Join the club! Together, we’ll read Laura Portwood-Stacer’s The Book Proposal Book and help each other through the process of getting a proposal out the door and into the hands of a future editor. Participants will receive a free copy of the book, and meeting times will be determined by group members. You can sign up to be a part of the club through the Book Proposal Club registration page.

The Faculty Hub offers one-on-one coaching sessions with Kitty Maynard, who is completing the accreditation process for the International Coaching Federation (ICF). In general, ICF coaching, which exists in diverse professional settings, uses powerful questions and active listening to help people define and prioritize what matters most to them. Coaching sessions can be helpful when you’re looking for clarity around a career or work issue, seeking to identify your priorities and steps to pursue those priorities (for example, before a sabbatical or a summer break or during a major project), navigating and preparing for leadership roles, working through your writing process, or hoping to create a balanced workflow that fits in with your life. Alternatives to Traditional Essays
There is much value in the traditional essay, but it’s not always the only, or even the best way to accomplish our teaching goals. Recently, instructors have been experimenting with a wide range of alternatives to the take-home essay, a process that the advent of generative AI has only accelerated. Derek Bruff, author of Intentional Tech, offers some alternatives on UVA's Teaching Hub page.

The Faculty Hub also provides University of Richmond faculty with personalized support for teaching and scholarship through confidential, individual, or small group consultations. In these individualized consultations, we can help you reflect on your pedagogical practices, match your goals for teaching and scholarship with appropriate methods, tools, and technologies, experiment with new ways to make your teaching more effective for all learners, and provide expert guidance and support for you as you incorporate new digital technologies into your pedagogy and scholarship. Sign up for a consultation here.
