April Newsletter
|
|
(If you have trouble reading this newsletter click here to view on web)
A big part of what we do in the Faculty Hub is encouraging and facilitating faculty learning together. This month, we wrap up some of our semester-based and academic year-based faculty cohorts including those focusing on inclusive pedagogy (two groups this year!), digital pedagogy (one each semester), and professional development for early career faculty. These are just some of the groups that meet regularly with and within the Faculty Hub. Faculty who have participated in the cohorts will be present to connect with other faculty at the upcoming Celebration of Teaching on Thursday, April 14 at 3:30 p.m. We invite all instructors to join the festivities! RSVP here. Please also let us know if you have a small group that we can help support. For example, some faculty have been gathering in the Faculty Hub to write together. More information about writing space is available in this newsletter. Also, a small group has been gathering from time to time over the past two academic years, to explore alternative assessment practices, including ungrading – a process that capitalizes on the benefits of formative feedback to guide learning and with adherence to a growth mindset. To understand why some faculty find this to be a transformational teaching and learning experience, please see Libby Gruner’s article in The Conversation and reach out to the Faculty Hub if you would like to learn more! In these and other activities, our goal has been to facilitate faculty-faculty learning and community building while also offering individualized faculty professional development support. In this month’s newsletter, we invite you to explore the opportunities and services we offer; as always, please reach out to us if you have unmet needs that we can discuss with you.

Faculty Hub Conversation: Adjuncts |
|
This month in our conversation series for adjunct faculty we will share strategies for critically reflecting on teaching – a practice that can be especially useful at the end of the semester. If you are teaching as an adjunct faculty member in any department or school, you are invited to join the conversation! This is a great way to connect across school boundaries as we use the time together for community-building and professional development.
This Faculty Hub Conversation will be co-facilitated by Kylie Korsnack (Faculty Hub), Carol Wittig (Library), and John Zinn (SPCS). Register for the conversation. |

Course Design Institute |
|
Are you planning to design a new course or redesign a previously taught course before the next academic year? Join the Faculty Hub team and other colleagues to get a jump start on course design and free up summer time for other activities. Our institute’s focus on significant learning outcomes will help you gain focus, creative energy, and useful feedback. We hope participants will leave the institute with a new or improved course design process, and with a course that they are excited to teach and that they are confident will have a significant impact on student learning. |

What is a course design institute?
The Faculty Hub's Course Development Institute (CDI) empowers instructors to leverage two evidence-based frameworks for course design – integrated design (Fink, 2003) and backward design (Wiggins & McTighe, 1993) – as tools for designing or redesigning one of their courses. Participants will learn about each framework, participate in workshops, engage in cross-disciplinary conversation with colleagues, and be provided with dedicated time and space to make significant progress on a syllabus and course schedule for one of their courses. Participants will leave the institute with a better understanding of best practices for course design, a detailed plan including revised learning objectives, assessments, and activities for one of their courses, and the tools to apply the same course design process to other courses in the future. Register for in-person or virtual. |

Morning Blend is the Faculty Hub’s “coffee break” style opportunity to learn something that will help faculty advance their teaching or scholarship. We offer presentations that last 15 minutes or less and provide a one-page tip sheet. We record the sessions for our archive. The program addresses timely needs that occur throughout the academic year and the program is mindful that time is our most precious resource! This semester's schedule can be found here.

Facilitated Course Assessment Service |
|
Are you planning to conduct an end-of-semester assessment in your courses? Would you like an opportunity to gain feedback from your students in a structured and anonymous format? Visit our website to learn more about the Faculty Hub’s facilitated course assessment service. This service offers faculty and instructional staff the opportunity to invite a consultant from the Faculty Hub into their classroom to gather anonymous feedback from their students through a facilitated conversation. The Hub consultant will provide the instructor with a written report that synthesizes student feedback and offer support for analyzing and responding to that feedback through a follow-up consultation. All reports and consultations are completely confidential. Reach out to the Faculty Hub or to Kylie, Libby, or Andrew directly to schedule a facilitated course assessment. |

What is your role in the Hub?
As the Administrative Coordinator of the Faculty Hub, I handle many of the day-to-day operational tasks for the Hub. A large piece of that is planning for programs and events, including setting up registrations, communicating with facilitators to ensure their needs are met, creating communications to promote events such as digital flyers and SpiderBytes, and being present for events to make sure they run smoothly. I also work on other communications such as the Year in Review and Guidebook.
What is a recent project that inspired / excited you? I recently finished heading up logistics for the 2022 Faculty Accomplishments Reception. It was inspiring to see the breadth of work our faculty created last year despite the challenges of the pandemic. I am also looking forward to our next event, our first Celebration of Teaching.
What's a fun fact about you? One of my favorite responsibilities at the Hub is making playlists for events, particularly Faculty Hub Talks. When possible, I like to customize them to the theme of the talk. The first playlist I made was for our very first Hub Talk in October 2019 given by Dr. Nicole Maurantonio entitled “What Can a Taxidermied Horse Tell Us About Public Memory?” You would be surprised how many songs there are about horses!
